Education
I have a strong commitment to public education that stems from being a graduate of the Bronx High School of Science, State University of New York's University at Albany and University at Buffalo Law School. I helped create Community Board 8’s Youth and Education Committee, identified a Free Yellow Bus Program for local youth service providers, and created an internship program to better serve the youth and education needs of our community. As your Council member I will continue to fight for increased funding for youth services and education.
Hosts Movie Premier for 'Brooklyn Castle' to Call for Greater Investment in Education and After-School Programs
Kallos Calls on Elected Officials to See “Brooklyn Castle” Before Considering Cuts to Education and After-school Programs
New York, NY – New York City Council Candidate Ben Kallos joined director Katie Dellamaggiore and players Justus, Alexis and Rochelle from the film Brooklyn Castle at its premier last night on Friday October 19, 2012 at Lincoln Center’s Film Society to call for greater investment in education and after-school programs.
“I am pleased to support Brooklyn Castle, which shows the real results our City can get when we invest in education and after-school programs,” said City Council Candidate Ben Kallos.
The campaign was inspired by Brooklyn Castle to add a new solution to its education platformwith our commitment to: Support Chess in Schools to Promote Better Decision Making in New York City's Youth to Lower Juvenile Delinquency
“Any Elected Official should be required to see Brooklyn Castle before making any cuts to education or after-school programs,” demands Kallos. "We'll even buy you a ticket!"
“Elected Officials must understand that every dollar cut from education and after-school programs kills the hopes and dreams of our City’s youth and is ultimately an investment of $2.50 or more in our criminal justice system,” Kallos concludes, “Let’s invest in our children’s future and not our prisons!”

Follow the model spotlighted by Brooklyn Castle to support Chess in Schools throughout New York City in order to lower juvenile delinquency, drug use, and teen pregnancy while saving $2.50 for every $1 we spend on the program in our long term criminal justice budgeting. Lets invest in our children's future not in prisons!
WHY OUT OF SCHOOL TIME MATTERS:
ONLY 15% OF CHILDREN PARTIPATE IN AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAMS
Only 8.4 million K-12 children (15 percent) participate in afterschool programs. An additional 18.5 million would participate if a quality program were available in their community. (Afterschool Alliance, 2009)
3PM – 6PM ARE PEAK HOURS FOR JUVENILE CRIME
The hours between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. are the peak hours for juvenile crime and experimentation with drugs, alcohol, cigarettes and sex. (Fight Crime: Invest in Kids, 2002)
RESULTS THAT MATTER FROM OUT OF SCHOOL TIME:
THREE TIMES LESS LIKELY TO SKIP CLASS OR USE DRUGS
Teens who do not participate in afterschool programs are nearly three times more likely to skip classes than teens who do participate. They are also three times more likely to use marijuana or other drugs, and are more likely to drink, smoke and engage in sexual activity. (YMCA of the USA, March 2001)
EVERY DOLLAR INVESTED IN AFTER SCHOOL SAVES $2.50 IN CRIME-RELATED COSTS
Children in LA’s BEST afterschool program attend school more often and report higher aspirations for finishing school and going to college. LA’s BEST participants are 20 percent less likely to drop out and are 30 percent less likely to participate in criminal activities. Researchers estimate that every dollar invested in the LA’s BEST program saves the city $2.50 in crime-related costs. (UCLA National Center for Research on Evaluation, Standards and Student Testing, June 2000, December 2005 and September 2007)
