Good Government

As founder of WikiLaw.org, I believe that the Government and its body of law should be transparent for the people it governs. As founder of VoterSearch.org, I believe that protecting your right to vote is essential to an accountable government. As former Co-Chair of Community Board 8's Communication Committee, I worked to open the community board by announcingcommunity board membership applications and ensuring they were widely available at meetings. I have continued my work with Community Board 8's Communication Committee and we have made its television show "Community Board 8 Speaks" available online.

As your City Council member I will continue the work of making City Hall transparent by making its business available online through the web, PDF, podcast, and YouTube like videos. I will openCity Hall by creating NYC.OpenLegislation.org, a local version of OpenCongress.org, where anyone will be able to share their views on all business, in support of the mission of theParticipatory Politics Foundation. City Hall will become accountable to you the people as NYC.OpenLegislation.org, will let you track business before City Hall and how your representative voted on issues of importance to you.

Endorsements for the "Labor Candidate"

We've quickly picked up the "labor candidate" label. With so few pro-labor candidates running, I am the only union-side labor attorney running for City Council and one of a handful who has ever served a union.  Our work with organized labor as a Chief of Staff in the Assembly, as Executive Director of New Roosevelt, and in the year since we launched our campaign has earned us endorsement letters from Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 1179, Boilermakers Local Lodge No. 5, Communication Workers of America Local 1101, and Utility Workers Union of America (UWUA) Local 1-2, which you can find at KallosForCouncil.com/Endorsements with coverage in Crain's Insider and the Daily News, and with many more to come.

 

We've also continued our trend as the only candidate to hold substantive events, with a discussion on "Labor and the 2013 Elections: Organizing for the 21st Century" featuring former Deputy Comptroller Barbara Mehlsack, a partner at Gorlick, Kravitz and Listhaus, P.C.  Video of the full discussion is available below or online at KallosForCouncil.com/video.

I believe Ben Kallos is the only choice for District 5 City Council, because is a native Upper East Sider who knows the issues close to the community and has innovative and progressive solutions to resolve them. He is also a down to Earth candidate who works side by side with community members to get the job done. He is NOT a candidate who delegates tasks from an office seat. That is why I endorse Benjamin Kallos for City Council Seat District 5.
