Jobs

In these difficult economic times we must reform our regressive tax system, not create new draconian sales taxes that burden our City's working families, while cutting vital services like health care and education that we need. We should create new economic incentive programs to encourage growth and job creation. I had the privilege of working on one such progressive economic program, the Second Avenue Subway Construction Grants Program, while serving as Chief of Staff to Assemblyman Jonathan L. Bing. This program would provide economic and technical support to small businesses that were negatively affected by the construction of the Second Avenue Subway. Through innovative economic development and tax reform we will combat the threat of rows of empty store fronts and maintain a vibrant community by helping to keep small independently owned and operated businesses open and preserving jobs through even the most difficult of economic times.

I am endorsing this campaign because I believe Benjamin Kallos could be a great success as councilman for the 5th district of New York City.  He has clear, set goals and plans for what has yet to be done in this city, and what is in need of some changes.  He is a strong candidate, with a decorated background, and he is the perfect example of a politician should be in this city, as well as this nation.

I responded to Ben's advertisement in September, searching for internship opportunities prior to enrolling in law school.  I had done campaign work in the past, but what really drives me are labor issues and the intersection of labor, law, and politics.  Ben was incredibly supportive, not only tailoring my work to these interests, but coaching me through the LSAT, law school applications, and a career in law.  I began researching City labor policy and seeking labor union meetings and endorsements, building a contact list of three hundred unions and leaders.  This involved thousands of calls, dozens of meetings, and hundreds of hours spent drafting briefs and articles.  I have never learned so much so quickly, and this internship has left me confident in my chosen career.

Ben is not only an exceptional mentor, but runs a truly progressive campaign unlike any other I've encountered.  Our team has run everything from voter registration drives in public schools to subway petitions.  Every intern has the opportunity to pursue their own passion in addition to fundraising, canvassing, and managing campaign events.  Whether it's education, public transit, or health issues that fascinate you, you will have the chance to conduct research, meet leaders in the field, and apply your own creativity in designing events and programs.

I strongly encourage you to join Ben Kallos' City Council campaign.  There is so much to be gained.

Ben is the most progressive and qualified campaign out there. Interning this semester and summer, I hope to make a positive contribution and spread the word about his campaign.
