SIERRA CLUB ENDORSES BEN KALLOS

Nation’s Largest Grassroots Conservation Organization Praises Ben Kallos’ Strong Commitment to Protecting the Environment and Public Health

New York, N.Y.  Today, the Sierra Club (National), including the Atlantic Chapter (NY State) and the NYC Group, announced its endorsement of Ben Kallos in the election for City Council in the 5th District (Upper East Side and Roosevelt Island) for his commitment to environmentalism.

“Ben Kallos has the ability to help tackle the major environmental challenges that New York City faces. He has innovative ideas to preserve our green spaces and improve our city’s sustainability,” said Irene Van Slyke, Political Chair.

The Sierra Club will mobilize its 11,000 members citywide to support endorsed candidates.

“We’ll proudly support Ben Kallos with our successful and time-tested organizing efforts,” said Ken Baer Chair of the Executive Committee of the NYC Group.

The Sierra Club’s New York City group is the local chapter of the nation’s oldest and largest environmental organization. It has worked to fight fracking across New York State, to maintain New York City’s wildlife habitats and to promote smart environmental policies.

“Our city will see more storms and threats in upcoming years, and local government will need to work with groups like the Sierra Club to help prevent and prepare for these environmental challenges,” said Kallos. “I’m proud to receive the Sierra Club’s endorsement and will continue to make green policies a priority.”

Kallos has already worked to promote awareness of fracking by holding a screening of the anti-fracking documentary Gasland II at his campaign office this year attended by dozens. His ideas to reduce waste and maintain New York’s quality of life include a move to 75 percent recycling to match other major cities’ efforts, requiring cities to use green lighting and working to phase in congestion pricing.
