Roosevelt Island

As a third generation Upper East Sider, I have deep roots in the community including on Roosevelt Island where my grandfather, Dr. Andrew Kallos, served patients at Coler-Goldwater Memorial Hospital upon completing his distinguished service in the United States Armed services during World War II.

As a Chief of Staff to an Upper East Side Assembly Member and longtime member of Community Board 8 Manhattan, I have kept the needs of Roosevelt Island residents at the forefront of my agenda. Working alongside resident leaders to fight for "Democracy on Roosevelt Island" through recognition of the Governor of elections for Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation (RIOC) Board Members and "Access Roosevelt Island" to provide transportation alternatives for Roosevelt Island.

I will continue to fight for responsible development on Roosevelt Island of the infrastructure improvements that will be required to better support the existing 12,000 residents as well as the 2,780 new students and faculty that Cornell NYC Tech will bring.

There are at times incidents on Roosevelt Island involving the public safety department and residents that spark outcry from the community, as can be seen in a January 29, 2013 New York Daily News article http://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/roosevelt-island-officers-beat-20-ye... and a January 11, 2013 post in the Roosevelt Islander http://rooseveltislander.blogspot.com/2013/01/rira-public-safety-committ.... In order to hold the public safety department accountable, there should be greater oversight over such incidents.

Currently, the Civilian Complaint Review Board (CCRB), an independent New York City agency composed entirely of civilian employees, receives and investigates complaints against New York City police officers. The board may recommend action against police officers for alleged use of excessive or unnecessary force, abuse of authority or the use of offensive language. The board ultimately reports to the New York Police Department (NYPD) commissioner.

In order to hold the public safety department accountable, a community review board of Roosevelt Island residents should be established. The board would meet once a month with the public safety department to review major incidents occuring during that month. The board would be administered by the Roosevelt Island Operation Corporation.

Explanation: 

Roosevelt Island deserves more than to have access to elected officials once a month during constituent hours or when an elected official is there for a campaign.  The City Council Member, State Assembly Member, State Senator, and Congress Member should take a joint lease on a single location where a staff could be easily accessible for any Roosevelt Island resident to just walk in get the government services they need.   Roosevelt Island residents should not have to take a bus to a tram to a train to a bus to an office then back again, Government should come to them.
